Electrify Wairarapa

Regional but big on transport and innovation

The Electrify Wairarapa Conference at the Copthorne Hotel in Masterton last weekend was a resounding success, drawing significant attention to innovations in electrical heavy transport, new battery energy storage systems, and energy solutions for remote communities. The event provided a platform for Thundergrid to showcase how our technologies can solve the pressing challenges these industries face.

A highlight of the conference was the opportunity to bring one of our DC chargers over the Rimutakas to Masterton. However, the real standout moment was when our CEO, Jonny, spoke to local businesses, councils, and transport providers. His presentation opened many eyes to the potential of new technologies, particularly Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These large batteries can provide charging solutions for heavy vehicles even in areas with limited power supply. They are designed to intelligently manage when to draw power from the grid, when to charge vehicles, and when to recharge themselves. Some systems even come with integrated charging solutions, or vice versa—the battery system embedded in the charger.

Another key topic was V2G, which stands for ‘vehicle to grid’. This technology allows electric vehicle batteries to serve as a backup power source for homes or businesses during power outages. We saw this in action during Cyclone Gabrielle, when EV batteries helped supply power to homes with downed electricity grids. With new technology car batteries could become mobile energy storage systems that provide not just power for the vehicle, but also for other critical systems, especially in remote or disaster-stricken areas. This could significantly enhance resilience during extreme events.

The Electrify Wairarapa Conference also provided Thundergrid with a valuable opportunity to connect with customers and fellow exhibitors. We are grateful to Sustainable Wairarapa for their excellent organisation and support in making this event such a success!
